Volunteer

The Visitor Center and FoBB Nature Store are currently CLOSED due to the pandemic. HOWEVER, when you see "Closed" that does not mean the refuge is closed--only the Visitor Center and FoBB Nature Store are closed.

What do FoBB volunteers do?

  • Help man the tables at special events
  • Share special skills, such as how to build a bird feeder
  • Mow and pull weeds
  • Work for four-hour shifts in the Visitor Center
  • Lead nature walks, or help the Naturalist with school groups
  • Answer the phones
  • Input data
  • Bake pies for Fall Celebration
  • Share enthusiasm for wildlife
  • ... and so much more!
Volunteers are the lifeblood of Friends of Black Bayou Lake National Wildlife Refuge. If you have some time that you can give, please consider volunteering. We will provide the training--you provide the enthusiasm!

Volunteer docents are needed 7 days a week--8 am-4 pm weekdays, 9 am-5 pm Saturdays, and 1-5 pm Sundays. Most people volunteer for 4-hour time slots.

To volunteer as a docent (host) at the Refuge Visitor Center, you may contact the volunteers at 318-387-1114, or FoBB President-Elect Deborah Evans at 318-381-3540 and either of them can direct you as to volunteer opportunities and schedules.

Volunteer opportunities available include such activities/tasks as lawn care, planting, weeding, painting, woodwork, and more--some of which require training, some only require willingness! Contact friendsofblackbayou@gmail.com or call 318-387-1114 to talk about other opportunities to help out at the Refuge. Thank you!

Educator Volunteer

Education is key to preserving wildlife, and helping people understand that actions they take affect the wildlife, habitat, and survival of species in ways they may not have previously known.  If you are an educator, and would like to volunteer to educate our members, the public, or assist in any way, please contact friendsofblackbayou@gmail.com.
